Anti-Slip Flooring: What OSHA Actually Requires (and Doesn’t)
A lot of facility managers assume there’s a legal minimum slip-resistance number a floor has to hit. There isn’t. OSHA has stated directly that it has no standard mandating a specific coefficient of friction for walking and working surfaces. A nonmandatory appendix once referenced a static coefficient of friction of 0.5, based on a University of Michigan study, but OSHA itself was clear that figure was never intended as an absolute standard, and no employer is legally required to hit it.
Without a hard number to comply with, most facilities rely on independent lab testing, using dynamic coefficient of friction methods based on ANSI test standards, to document that a floor performs well in wet, oily, or high-traffic conditions. That documentation matters for liability purposes even without a legal minimum behind it.
Anti-slip flooring earns its cost in specific conditions: wash-down areas, commercial kitchens, loading docks, and any wet or greasy process line where a standard smooth floor becomes a hazard.
Anti-Static (ESD) Flooring: Protecting Sensitive Equipment
Anti-static flooring, often called ESD flooring for electrostatic discharge, addresses a completely different risk than slip resistance. The EOS/ESD Association’s ANSI/ESD S20.20 standard names flooring as one of the core control measures in a facility-wide ESD control program, alongside grounding, seating, and packaging.
The reason flooring matters so much here comes down to how little static charge it actually takes to cause damage. The same standard defines its protection threshold at discharges as low as 100 volts, a level far below what a person can even feel, but enough to destroy sensitive electronic components on contact.
Anti-static flooring earns its cost in electronics assembly areas, server rooms, labs handling sensitive equipment, and anywhere ESD-sensitive parts are stored, handled, or built.
How to Tell Which One (or Both) Your Facility Needs
Start with a simple question: does the floor get wet, oily, or greasy during normal operations? If so, anti-slip flooring addresses that risk directly.
Then ask a second question: does the space handle, store, or assemble electronics or other ESD-sensitive components? If so, anti-static flooring is the relevant fix, regardless of whether the floor ever gets wet.
Some spaces need both properties in the same floor. An electronics assembly line with an attached wash-down or cleaning station is a common example where slip risk and static risk exist side by side.
What Goes Into an Anti-Slip or Anti-Static Epoxy System
Anti-slip systems work by broadcasting an aggregate, commonly silica or aluminum oxide, into the epoxy while it cures, creating a textured surface. The degree of texture gets scaled to how wet or high-traffic the space is, since a light texture works for occasional moisture while a heavier broadcast suits a constant wash-down environment.
Anti-static systems work differently. They use a conductive or static-dissipative epoxy formulation paired with a grounding system that ties the floor into the building’s electrical ground. This needs to be installed and verified as a complete system, not treated as a simple coating swap, since the grounding connections are what actually make the floor function as intended.
